About The Role

Join Whitworths as a Site Reliability Engineer

Build Resilience. Keep Whitworths Moving.

Love solving problems before they become problems? Obsessed with making systems faster, smarter and more reliable? Want the freedom to challenge how things are done and engineer a better way?

At Whitworths, technology is critical to how we manufacture, operate and grow. We’re looking for a Site Reliability Engineer who can combine technical expertise with an automation-first mindset to make sure the systems our people rely on are resilient, secure and ready for what’s next.

Your Mission

As our Site Reliability Engineer, your mission is simple: make technology work brilliantly – and keep it that way.

You’ll sit at the intersection of infrastructure, operations and engineering, taking ownership of reliability across our technology landscape. From improving observability and automating repetitive tasks to responding when something goes wrong, you’ll help us move from reactive firefighting to proactive engineering.

This isn't about keeping the lights on. It's about engineering the lights so they rarely go off.

What You’ll Do

  • Engineer Reliability: Build, maintain and continuously improve resilient infrastructure and services that our business can depend on
  • Automate the Ordinary: Identify repetitive manual processes and engineer them away through scripting, tooling and automation
  • See It Before It Happens: Develop monitoring, alerting and observability that gives us meaningful insight into system health and performance
  • Solve the Tough Stuff: Get hands-on with complex incidents, troubleshoot root causes and turn lessons learned into permanent improvements
  • Design for Resilience: Challenge single points of failure and build recovery, redundancy and scalability into our technology
  • Own Performance: Use data and metrics to understand how our systems are behaving and where we can make them better
  • Make Change Safer: Help improve deployment, configuration and change processes so we can move quickly without compromising stability
  • Raise the Bar: Share knowledge, improve documentation and champion SRE principles across our wider technology team

Real Technology. Real Impact.

You could be:

  • Automating a manual process that gives hours back to the team every week
  • Building dashboards that spot an emerging issue before users notice it
  • Engineering resilience into critical manufacturing and business systems
  • Improving backup, recovery and disaster-recovery capability
  • Investigating a complex incident and designing out the possibility of it happening again
  • Helping modernise infrastructure and introducing smarter ways to deploy, monitor and manage technology
  • Working with colleagues and technology partners to make our environment simpler, faster and more reliable

Who We’re Looking For

You’re a technically curious engineer who doesn't just ask “How do I fix this?” – you ask “How do I stop this happening again?”

You enjoy getting under the hood, understanding how systems interact and using engineering and automation to make technology better.

Essentials:

  • Strong experience working with infrastructure, systems or site reliability engineering
  • Hands-on experience with cloud and/or hybrid infrastructure
  • Confidence with scripting and automation
  • Experience with monitoring, alerting and observability tools
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across interconnected systems and services
  • A good understanding of networking, security, resilience, backup and recovery
  • Experience investigating incidents and carrying out meaningful root-cause analysis
  • The ability to translate technical issues into clear, practical conversations with stakeholders
  • A mindset built around continuous improvement, ownership and automation

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code
  • Exposure to CI/CD and DevOps practices
  • Experience with containers, orchestration or modern cloud-native technologies
  • Knowledge of SRE principles such as SLIs, SLOs and error budgets
  • Experience supporting technology within manufacturing or FMCG
  • A healthy dislike of doing the same manual task twice
